Background
Although the healing magic wielded by knights of the Balanced Scales can do miraculous things, it can rarely ever restore life. That was what made it remarkable when High Justicar Atreus Guardianshield gave life to Xieraine Laedrin’s stillborn corpse. It was so remarkable, in fact, that many within the Order believed that it could only have been possible if Thymadra, the goddess of justice that they serve, herself had personally desired Xier to live—meaning that he must have been something special. Many assumed that he was an Incarnate, a mortal given special powers by their goddess that ordinary knights don’t possess—the first one in generations.
Because of this, Xier spent his childhood believing that he was destined to be a champion of the Order, and it was a destiny that he embraced full heartedly—even if it sometimes seemed far beyond his reach. He was sickly for much of his early life, which made him physically weak for most of his childhood and also kept the innate fey ability to command glamour—illusion magic—from manifesting in him. It wasn’t until he was coming to be a teenager that he finally started to gain in health.
When the time came for him to begin his training, Amara Trueheart—one of the most celebrated knights of their order—volunteered to take him under her wing, and they quickly grew close. He devoted almost all his waking hours to his training, his determination to become a knight practically turning into an obsession, and excelled at it.
But, for all his efforts, there was one thing that had yet to happen, one thing that he could not control as easily as his training. By the time he was eighteen years old, he still hadn’t shown any signs of the Incarnate powers that he was supposedly destined to have and, though there was no knowing how long exactly the powers would take to develop, many within the Order began to doubt that he actually was an Incarnate—and Xier counted himself among them. His enthusiasm over his destiny waned, and it wasn’t long until he became outright bitter about it.
Regardless of whether or not he was an Incarnate, though, one thing was certain: He would do all in his power to be the best knight he could be.
