Evil can spawn for many reasons—but never before has Xier seen that reason be entertainment.
In the weeks since Xieraine Laedrin and his new partner, Ruthana Karple, left the farming village of Goldstead, their lives have been remarkably calm. They’ve done several small jobs for the villages they’ve passed through, and are becoming more comfortable in each other’s presence. Xier is more at ease than he’s been in some time.
So, of course, it couldn’t possibly last. While traveling in the northern reaches of Durnia, Xier and Ruthana are attacked in the night by a group of frost giant raiders, who overwhelm them and take them captive. When the two of them are brought before the giants’ king, a fearsome warrior called Sonyr the Dragonslayer, they are told that they’re to be fighters in Sonyr’s gladiatorial arena. If they can win a fight, they will be released. But Xier and Ruthana aren’t the only prisoners being forced to fight for Sonyr’s pleasure, and they know that they can’t leave the others behind.
And that is only the beginning of their problems. A strange ailment has befallen Xier during their travels, plaguing him with random bouts of weakness, and his condition steadily worsens the longer they spend in Sonyr’s fortress. Xier doesn’t know the cause, but he does know that it could be a dangerous complication. He can only pray that it doesn’t lead to his ultimate demise—and that of everyone he hopes to save.
